MLK Weekend in Miami Planner

Last reviewed: November 3, 2026. Sources for this page are listed in its fact sheet.

Short answer first. Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on Monday, January 18, 2027, and the four days before it hold the densest free culture weekend of the Miami winter. Thursday, January 14 brings the Orange Bowl College Football Playoff Semifinal at Hard Rock Stadium and the opening night of the South Beach Jazz Festival. Friday to Sunday, the 50th Art Deco Weekend takes over Ocean Drive while the jazz festival runs Collins Park, Lincoln Road, and the Bandshell, most of it free with an RSVP. One base, South Beach, puts both festivals within walking distance; the stadium is the weekend's one deliberate trip. Book the hotel first, the Orange Bowl and Faena Theater tickets second, and file the free jazz RSVPs third. The plan below runs the weekend day by day.

The weekend at a glance

Thursday, January 14: football or bossa nova. The Orange Bowl is a national semifinal this year, played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens; our Orange Bowl visitor guide covers its digital tickets, parking passes, and bag policy. The same night, the South Beach Jazz Festival opens with Bebel Gilberto at the Faena Theater, with shows at 7 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. Pick one; the late Faena show is just barely possible after the game and is not a plan this page recommends.

Friday, January 15: Art Deco by day, jazz by night. The 50th Art Deco Weekend opens along Ocean Drive between 5th and 12th Streets, a free Miami Design Preservation League festival. The League's full 2027 schedule and theme publish in December, so the shape here follows the festival's established pattern: street exhibitions, tours from the Art Deco Museum and Welcome Center at 1001 Ocean Drive, and lectures at the Wolfsonian FIU. At 5 p.m. the jazz festival holds its lecture and book signing at The Bass, and at 8 p.m. Carmen Lundy sings free in Collins Park.

Saturday, January 16: the two festival day. Art Deco Weekend in the morning, the jazz festival's free student stage on the 700 block of Lincoln Road from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the afternoon, and Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra at the Miami Beach Bandshell at 8 p.m. to close. Everything except the Bandshell night is free.

Sunday, January 17: the free Lincoln Road day. The jazz festival runs its Power Access Main Stage on Lincoln Road from 11 a.m. to the evening close, seven free sets from the Spirit of Goodwill Band to the AfroBeat Allstars, while Art Deco Weekend runs its final day a few blocks east. This is the day to keep unplanned beyond a lunch booking.

Monday, January 18: the holiday itself. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Festivals are done; the day belongs to the beach, a late brunch, and the trip home, or to the start of a longer January stay. One common confusion to clear: the Miami Marathon is not this weekend. It runs two weeks later, on Sunday, January 31, with its own guide on this site.

Where to stay, and the booking order

Stay in South Beach. Ocean Drive, Collins Park, and Lincoln Road form one walkable triangle, and the weekend's only drives are Thursday's stadium trip and the airport runs. The Art Deco hotels guide covers sleeping inside the festival itself, and the South Beach hotels guide compares the wider strip. A Collins Avenue base near 21st Street splits the difference between the Art Deco District and Collins Park.

Book in this order. One, the hotel, because a holiday weekend with a playoff semifinal in the same metro prices early and does not soften. Two, the ticketed pieces: the Orange Bowl, Bebel Gilberto's Faena Theater night, and the Bandshell's reserved seats. Three, the free RSVPs for the Collins Park concert and the Lincoln Road days, which cost nothing and protect your spot in the two events most likely to fill. Four, one anchor tour for a quiet morning: the League's own Art Deco walking tour pattern is covered in our Art Deco walking tour guide, and the wider tour shelf is on Viator.

What the weekend costs in effort, honestly

The pleasant surprise of this weekend is how little of it needs money. Two festivals are free, the beach is free, and the paid list is short: a hotel at holiday weekend rates, one or two ticketed nights, and food. The real cost is crowding. A playoff semifinal pulls a football crowd into the same weekend as two beach festivals and a federal holiday, so restaurants near Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road book out at prime hours; put dinner reservations on the days you care about and let the free days stay loose. January weather is the other honest note: this is peak dry season and the most reliable beach weather of the year, which is exactly why the whole calendar stacks onto these four days. The month around the weekend is in Miami in January.
