Miami's free trolleys and Freebee rides: the no-car route planner
Last reviewed: November 7, 2026. Sources for this page are listed in its fact sheet.
Short answer first. You can cross a lot of Miami without paying a fare, but no single system covers the city. Miami Beach runs a free trolley citywide from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, about every 20 minutes on most routes. The City of Miami runs 10 free trolley routes on the mainland. Coral Gables runs its own free trolley, and Freebee runs free on-demand rides inside set zones. The catch is the seams. None of these services reaches Miami International Airport or PortMiami, so the airport and cruise trips still need a paid ride, a Metrorail trip, or a hotel shuttle. Plan around the seams and the free network works. Ignore them and you'll strand yourself at a curb.

Miami Beach: one trolley system, four main loops and a hospital link
The Miami Beach trolley is free, citywide, and simple: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, with an average wait of about 20 minutes on each route, per the city's trolley pages, checked November 7, 2026. Four loops do the visitor work. The South Beach Loop runs in two directions, Loop A clockwise and Loop B counterclockwise, through the Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road core. The Middle Beach Loop covers the Collins Avenue resort row. The North Beach Loop circulates inside North Beach, roughly 65th to 88th Streets and Normandy Isle. The Collins Express is the fast north-south run: limited stops from Washington Avenue and Lincoln Road up to 88th Street, about every 15 minutes, and it's the transfer that turns the local loops into one beach-length trip. The city's contract also lists a fifth service, the Mount Sinai Link to the hospital. It exists. Most visitors will never ride it.
Two habits make the Beach system pay. Ride the Collins Express for distance and a loop for the last blocks, instead of waiting on a slow loop for the whole trip. And save the city's trolley tracker page on your phone before you leave the hotel, because a 20 minute average wait feels long standing in the sun at noon with no shade and a dinner reservation ticking down.
The Beach's second free ride: Freebee in Mid Beach and North Beach
Freebee is the on-demand half of the Beach system. Inside its Miami Beach zone, which covers Mid Beach and parts of North Beach, you request a free ride in the app and a small electric vehicle takes you door to door inside the zone. The city lists the hours as Monday to Friday 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with phone booking at 855-918-3733. The city describes it as a first and last mile link to the trolley and bus stops, and that's the right way to use it: Freebee to the Collins Express stop, express up or down the beach, loop at the other end. It doesn't cross the bay. Nothing free does, except the free water taxi on weekdays, which is the one cross-bay free ride in this whole planner.
City of Miami trolley: 10 routes on the mainland
Across the bay, the City of Miami trolley is also free, and its route list is longer than most visitors expect: Allapattah, Biscayne, Brickell, Coconut Grove, Coral Way, Health District, Little Havana, Overtown, Stadium and Wynwood. The hours split into three patterns on the city's trolley information page. Biscayne, Brickell, Coconut Grove, Coral Way and Little Havana run Monday to Saturday 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Health District, Stadium and Wynwood run the same Monday to Saturday hours with no Sunday service. Allapattah stops at 7 p.m. and skips Sunday. Overtown is the thin one: Monday to Friday only, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
For a visitor the working routes are Brickell for the downtown hotels, Wynwood for the walls and breweries, Little Havana for Calle Ocho, and Coconut Grove for the bayfront village. The Stadium route is the game day play for loanDepot park events. Headways aren't published on the route pages we checked, so treat this as a ride you take when it comes, not a connection you time to the minute. If you're cutting it fine for a reservation, take the Metromover downtown or pay for the car. The trolley is a bonus, not a promise.
Coral Gables: two main routes, one pilot, no Sundays
Coral Gables runs a free trolley Monday to Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., with no service on Sundays, July 4, Thanksgiving or Christmas, per the city. Two main routes start at the Douglas Road Metrorail station. The Ponce de Leon route runs north and south on Ponce de Leon Boulevard between the station and Flagler Street. The Grand Avenue route runs through the historic McFarlane Homestead district. A third route, the Southern Loop, started as a one year pilot on November 3, 2025, running from Douglas Road station to Red Road by way of Ponce de Leon and serving the University of Miami area. That pilot year has just ended and the city page still lists it as a pilot, so check the city page before you build a day on it. The two main routes are the settled part of the system, and our Coral Gables guide covers what they reach.
Freebee on the mainland: Downtown, Brickell, Edgewater and Wynwood
On the mainland, Freebee and the Miami Downtown Development Authority run a single free on-demand zone that joins Downtown Miami, Brickell and Edgewater, per Freebee's own announcement. In Wynwood, rides have to begin or end in Wynwood under the current service pattern, and the zone reaches toward Edgewater, Midtown and the Metromover's 15th Street area. In Coconut Grove, Freebee changed form in 2026 and now runs as a fixed route with 14 stops instead of pure on-demand rides. Zones and hours shift as sponsors renew, and Freebee's service area pages are the live source. Check the app on the day. A zone boundary you remember from a blog post last spring can leave you standing one block outside the fence.
The gaps, stated plainly
No route in the lists above serves MIA or PortMiami. That's the honest headline of this page. For the airport, the Metrorail Orange Line and the airport hotel shuttles in our MIA parking comparison and airport guides do the work. For the port, our cruise transfer pages cover the paid options, and the port comparison shows why the two ports need different plans. The free network is for days inside the neighborhoods: beach days on the loops, a Wynwood evening, a Coral Gables afternoon. Used that way, a no-car trip in Miami isn't a compromise. It's a workable plan with free legs.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an app or a pass?
For the trolleys, no. You board and ride. For Freebee, the app is the normal way to request a ride, and Miami Beach also lists a phone number, 855-918-3733.
Can the free trolley get me from South Beach to Wynwood?
Not on one seat. The Beach trolley stays on the Beach, and the City of Miami trolley stays on the mainland. The weekday free water taxi links the two sides, and causeway buses and rideshares cover the rest.
Which free ride works on a Sunday?
Miami Beach, all day on its 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. schedule. On the mainland, Biscayne, Brickell, Coconut Grove, Coral Way and Little Havana run Sunday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Coral Gables doesn't run on Sundays at all.
