South Beach Guide

Last reviewed: October 26, 2026. Sources for this page are listed in its fact sheet.

Short answer first. South Beach is the southern neighborhood of the city of Miami Beach, generally described as running from South Pointe Drive at the island's tip up to the low 20s streets around Dade Boulevard. Its heart is Ocean Drive, where the Art Deco hotels face Lummus Park and the beach across the street. The beach itself is a City of Miami Beach beach, with Ocean Rescue lifeguards, a no alcohol and no smoking rule, and an overnight closure in the city code.

Where exactly is South Beach?

South Beach is a neighborhood, not a separate city. It is the southern end of Miami Beach, the barrier island city across Biscayne Bay from downtown Miami, reached from the mainland by the MacArthur Causeway, the same crossing that passes the cruise terminals. The name is generally used for the stretch from South Pointe Drive, at the island's southern tip on Government Cut, up to about 23rd Street and Dade Boulevard. North of that, locals call the shoreline Mid-Beach, and the distinction matters mostly for hotel addresses and noise levels: the energy of the strip concentrates in the southern blocks. South Pointe Park anchors the quiet southern end, a landscaped park where you can watch the cruise ships leave through the cut.

What is Ocean Drive actually like?

Ocean Drive is the postcard street: a row of pastel Art Deco hotels and cafes on one side, Lummus Park's palms and lawn in the middle, and the beach on the other. It sits inside the Art Deco Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and protects roughly 800 buildings. The district's original designation covered Ocean Drive from 5th to 15th Streets and Collins Avenue from 6th to 16th Streets, with EspaƱola Way added in the 1986 expansion, per the Miami Design Preservation League's own archive. The League's Art Deco Welcome Center stands at 1001 Ocean Drive, and its guided walking tours of the district leave from there, which makes it the natural first stop of a South Beach morning. By day the drive belongs to cyclists, walkers, and cafe tables; after dark the neon takes over and the crowds thicken.

What are the beach rules I need to know?

The rules are the City of Miami Beach's, and they are enforced. Alcohol is prohibited on the city's beaches, and smoking is prohibited too; both rules are the city's and are stated as such here, because the county and state park beaches elsewhere in Miami follow their own posted rules. Miami Beach's city code closes the public beach overnight, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. For safety, the city's Ocean Rescue division, headquartered at 1001 Ocean Drive with a hotline at (305) 673-7714, gives the advice this site repeats everywhere: swim in a guarded area near a lifeguard stand. If a rip current catches you, do not fight it head on; swim sideways, parallel to the shore, until you are out of the current, then angle back to the beach. Pick your stretch of sand by the stands: the guarded areas near the lifeguard towers are where the city wants you swimming.

How should I plan a South Beach day?

Start early with the architecture, when the light is good and Ocean Drive is quiet, and take the walking tour from the Welcome Center while the streets are still calm. Swim late morning near a lifeguard stand, eat lunch on Ocean Drive or a block inland on Collins or Washington, and give the hottest hours to shade, a museum, or a long cafe table. The beach empties out pleasantly toward evening, which is also when the ships leave the cut past South Pointe. Frequently asked questions

Is South Beach the same as Miami Beach?
No. Miami Beach is the city, a barrier island between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic. South Beach is its southern neighborhood, the famous strip at the island's lower end. Every South Beach address is in Miami Beach; most of Miami Beach is not South Beach.

Can I drink alcohol on South Beach?
No. The City of Miami Beach prohibits alcohol on its beaches, and smoking as well. Drinks belong at the Ocean Drive cafes across from the sand, not on it.

Where do the Art Deco walking tours start?
At the Art Deco Welcome Center, 1001 Ocean Drive, run by the Miami Design Preservation League, the nonprofit that works to preserve the district. It is the best first stop in the neighborhood.

Is South Beach good for families?
Yes, in the daytime pattern this page describes: guarded swimming, Lummus Park for shade and space, and the architecture walk. The strip gets louder and more adult as the night goes on, which families usually plan around rather than into.
