Best Beaches in Miami Ranked
Last reviewed: October 26, 2026. Sources for this page are listed in its fact sheet.
Short answer first. This is an editorial ranking, ours, scored on four criteria: lifeguard coverage, facilities, setting and space, and who the beach suits best. South Beach takes first place for the full Miami package of guarded sand, the Art Deco backdrop, and everything within walking distance. Crandon Park is the family pick, Cape Florida the nature pick, and Haulover the locals' big day out. The order is opinion; the facts under each entry are checked.

How did we rank these beaches?
Four criteria, applied the same way to every entry. Lifeguard coverage first, because a guarded beach is a safer beach; the City of Miami Beach's Ocean Rescue division staffs the city stands, and its standing advice, swim in a guarded area near a lifeguard stand, is the rule we rank by. Facilities second: restrooms, concessions, rentals, and parking. Setting third: park shade and dunes score above bare sand. And fit last: a beach that is perfect for a toddler day can be wrong for a first timer who wants the postcard. Miami-Dade County describes 17 miles of county beaches running from Government Cut to the Broward County line, so there is no shortage of sand; the ranking is about which stretch earns your one beach day.
1. South Beach, for the full Miami day
The famous one earns it. The southern stretch of the city of Miami Beach pairs a wide, lifeguarded beach with Lummus Park and the Art Deco Historic District across Ocean Drive, so the beach day and the sightseeing day are the same day. Facilities are the strongest on this list, the people watching is unmatched, and everything from the walking tours at the Art Deco Welcome Center at 1001 Ocean Drive to dinner is a short walk. It is also the busiest and the most expensive sand in Miami, and city rules apply in full: no alcohol and no smoking on City of Miami Beach beaches. The complete guide is our South Beach guide.
2. Crandon Park Beach, for families
Crandon Park, the county park on Key Biscayne, is the beach we send families with small children to first. It is a full park rather than a strip of sand: picnic areas, facilities, and room to spread out, reached over the Rickenbacker Causeway. The setting scores it above the urban beaches for a long, self catered day, and the drive out over the water is part of the pleasure. Expect a per vehicle entry fee at the gate; check the county park page for the current amount before you go.
3. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, for nature and the lighthouse
At the southern end of Key Biscayne, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park holds over a mile of sandy Atlantic beachfront and the Cape Florida Lighthouse, built in 1825 and reconstructed in 1846, which Florida State Parks calls the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County. Guided lighthouse tours run twice daily, Thursday through Monday, per the state park service. This is the quietest, greenest beach day in the ranking and the one that feels least like a city. As a state park it charges a per vehicle entry fee; confirm the current fee on the park's page.
4. Haulover Beach Park, for the big local day out
Haulover Beach Park, the county park between Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles Beach, runs 1.4 miles of beach park with restored sand dunes and palm shaded picnic grounds, and it has been open to the public since 1948. It is the locals' scale of beach: wide sand, full park facilities, a marina across the road, and room that the South Beach strip cannot match. It ranks below the top three only because it asks a drive from most visitors and gives back less sightseeing per hour. County parking lots serve the park and are paid; the county posts the current rates.
5. Mid-Beach, for a quieter Miami Beach
Same city, same guarded sand, fewer people. The Miami Beach shoreline north of the South Beach strip keeps the Ocean Rescue coverage and the beachwalk while dropping the Ocean Drive intensity, and it is where we point travelers who want the city beach without the scene. The trade is nightlife and dining density; you will walk or ride south for both. Rules are the City of Miami Beach's, identical to South Beach: no alcohol, no smoking.
6. South Pointe Park, for ships and sunsets
At the island's southern tip, South Pointe Park wraps the beach in a landscaped park at the edge of Government Cut, the channel the cruise ships use. Come for a shorter beach session rather than a full day: swim, walk the park, and watch the afternoon departures sail past from the shore. It pairs naturally with a South Beach day, since it anchors the southern end of the same strip.
The facts that matter
Miami-Dade County describes 17 miles of county beaches from Government Cut to the Broward County line. The City of Miami Beach prohibits alcohol and smoking on its beaches; that rule is the city's and applies to South Beach and Mid-Beach on this list, not automatically to county or state park beaches. Ocean Rescue guidance from the City of Miami Beach: swim in a guarded area near a lifeguard stand, and if caught in a rip current, swim sideways, parallel to shore, to escape it, then angle back in. County and state park beaches on this list charge per vehicle entry; amounts change and are posted by the parks. County cleanup crews work seven days a week removing sargassum at the water line.

Frequently asked questions
Which beach is best for a first time visitor?
South Beach. It is the only entry where the beach, the architecture, and the dining all sit in the same walkable strip, which is exactly what a first trip is for. Our South Beach guide plans the day.
Which beach is closest to PortMiami?
South Beach, across the MacArthur Causeway from the port, typically 15 to 20 minutes by car. That is why it is the realistic beach in a post cruise day with a late flight.
Are Miami beaches free to enter?
The city beaches are open public sand with no entry gate. The county and state park beaches on this list charge a per vehicle entry fee, posted by the park and worth checking on the day, since amounts change.
Can I drink alcohol on Miami beaches?
Not on City of Miami Beach beaches, where the city prohibits alcohol, and not as a blanket rule anywhere: park beaches carry their own posted rules. Read the signs at the entrance of the beach you choose.
