Miami With Kids Guide

Short answer first. Build a family trip around three anchors: a museum day downtown at Frost Science and the Miami Children's Museum, an animal day at Jungle Island or Zoo Miami, and beach mornings on a lifeguarded stretch of sand with shade planned. One warning before you plan around old advice: the Miami Seaquarium, still recommended in older guides, closed permanently in October 2025. Do not put it in your itinerary.

Which big attractions are actually open?
Frost Science, the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science at 1101 Biscayne Blvd in downtown's Museum Park, pairs an aquarium with a planetarium and is the strongest rainy day and hot midday anchor in the city. Across the causeway on Watson Island, the Miami Children's Museum is built entirely for younger kids, and Jungle Island at 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail is the animal park next door, listed hours 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Zoo Miami, the county zoo at 12400 SW 152nd St in the southwest of the county, is the big full day option: it opens daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the last ticket sold at 4 p.m., and parking is free, per the zoo's own FAQ. Check current ticket prices on each attraction's own site before you go; prices move and this page does not freeze them.
What happened to the Miami Seaquarium?
It closed permanently in October 2025, after Miami-Dade County terminated its lease and the operator went through bankruptcy. Older blog posts, printed guides, and even some current looking lists still present it as an option, which is exactly the kind of stale fact this site exists to catch. If a list you are reading recommends the Seaquarium as open, treat the rest of that list with suspicion too.
Which beaches work best with kids?
The pattern that works: go in the morning, choose a stretch with a lifeguard stand in sight and stay near it, bring your own shade, and leave before the midday heat peaks. Miami Beach's lifeguarded areas give you the classic scene with facilities nearby; the calmer bay side parks and Key Biscayne are the usual local family answer when the ocean is rough. Our Miami beaches hub compares the main beaches with families in mind, including which ones pair a beach day with shaded park space.
How do family days actually run in Miami?
The rhythm that saves family trips here is outdoor mornings, indoor middays, outdoor evenings. The downtown museum day is the easy one to run without a car: the free Metromover loops past the Museum Park area, and the museum pair plus lunch fills a day. Zoo Miami and Jungle Island days are car or rideshare days. For boat days and Everglades trips, family friendly departures with transport included are usually simpler than assembling the logistics yourself, which is where the tours below come in.

Yes, with the rhythm above and the right gear. Rent the bulky items instead of flying with them: our Baby Gear Rental guide covers cribs, strollers, and car seats delivered in Miami.
Which area should a family stay in?
Miami Beach for walkable beach days, or a family resort with a serious pool for the days you never leave the property. The best hotels for families in Miami page ranks the options by what families actually use.
How do we handle the heat with kids?
Water and shade in the morning, air conditioning at midday, and no heroics. Miami's summer average high is around 91 degrees; plan like you believe it, and keep the museum day in reserve for the hottest or wettest day of the trip.
