Pre Cruise Miami Guide: Arrive Like a Local
Last reviewed: October 26, 2026. Sources for this page are listed in its fact sheet.
Short answer first. Fly in the day before you sail, stay in downtown or Brickell, and treat the evening as the start of the holiday rather than a layover. The port is a short drive across the causeway in the morning, the one hotel port shuttle we could verify on a hotel's own site costs $12 per person, and downtown's free Metromover and free city trolleys make the pre cruise evening easy without a car.

Why should I arrive the day before?
Because a cruise ship does not wait for a delayed flight. Arriving the day before turns the two things that ruin embarkation day, a late inbound plane and a traffic jam on a multi ship morning, into non events. It also buys you a Miami evening, and Miami is at its best after dark: bayfront dinners, lit towers, and warm air off the water. If your flight lands on sailing day anyway, book the earliest arrival you can and go straight to the port; the transfer options are compared in our MIA to PortMiami transfers guide.
Where should I stay the night before?
Downtown and Brickell, the mainland districts facing the port. They hold the closest hotel cluster to the terminals, and the drive in the morning is short enough that even heavy causeway traffic stays manageable. Our cruise passengers hotel guide works through the picks in detail. The one shuttle fact on this page is stated as fact because it is the one we verified on the hotel's own site: the Comfort Inn and Suites Downtown Brickell, Port of Miami runs a one way shuttle to PortMiami for $12 per person, booked at check in, and its hot breakfast is included in the rate (Choice Hotels' own page, checked October 25, 2026). The Hampton Inn and Suites Miami, Brickell Downtown includes breakfast but runs no port or airport shuttle, so budget for a rideshare from there.
Stay in Miami Beach instead only if you have two or more nights. The beach is the better holiday, but it adds a causeway crossing to embarkation morning, and the causeway is exactly where sailing day traffic stacks up.
How should I spend the pre cruise evening?
Keep it close to the hotel. Bayside Marketplace, the downtown waterfront complex at the foot of the Miamarina, is the easy default: the Greater Miami visitor bureau counts nearly 70 shops and 30 restaurants there, boat tours leave from its marina, and the Sky Views Miami observation wheel rises 180 feet over the bayfront. Getting around downtown costs nothing if you use the free options: Miami-Dade Transit's Metromover loops through downtown and Brickell with no fare, and the City of Miami's trolleys are free to ride, with the Coral Way route running out toward the port. Eat a real dinner, buy the sunscreen and anything else the suitcase missed, and be in bed at a sane hour. Sail away feels better rested.
What should embarkation morning look like?
Work back from the arrival window your cruise line assigns, not from the ship's departure time. Breakfast first, bags down, and a car booked or a shuttle seat confirmed the night before, because every other passenger in your hotel is leaving in the same hour. Add buffer for the causeway and the port tunnel approaches, which slow down when several ships board at once. Keep passports and boarding documents in your carry on, keep medication with you, and check the ship's app for any terminal change before you leave the hotel; assignments can move, and the PortMiami guide explains the terminal layout.

Frequently asked questions
Can I walk from a downtown hotel to my terminal?
No, not comfortably with luggage. No downtown or Brickell hotel is a sensible walk to a cruise terminal; plan a shuttle, taxi, or rideshare for every sailing morning.
Is one night enough, or should I book two?
One night protects the sailing. Book two if the beach or a full Miami day is part of the trip, and stay in Miami Beach for that version; the day before cruise itinerary plans the longer stay.
My flight lands late the night before. What matters most?
Proximity and a confirmed morning transfer. Stay downtown, register for the hotel shuttle or pre book a car at check in, and have documents packed in your carry on so the morning is one straight line to the terminal.
